Pneumothorax

Pneumothorax, commonly known as a collapsed lung, is a condition where air collects in the space between the lung and the chest wall. This buildup of air puts pressure on the lung, causing it to partially or completely collapse. It can occur suddenly and may require immediate medical attention.

Pneumothorax

What Causes Pneumothorax?

  • Chest trauma or injury
  • Rib fractures damaging the lung
  • Underlying lung diseases
  • Spontaneous occurrence without obvious cause

Common Symptoms

  • Sudden chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid breathing
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Reduced breath sounds on one side

When Should You Seek Treatment?

You should seek immediate medical attention if:

  • You experience sudden chest pain and breathing difficulty
  • Symptoms worsen rapidly
  • There is a history of chest injury
  • You feel dizzy or faint

Delayed treatment can lead to serious complications and worsening lung collapse.

Diagnosis & Evaluation

Diagnosis is confirmed through imaging and clinical examination:

  • Chest X-ray
  • CT scan of the chest
  • Physical examination and monitoring

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the size and severity of the pneumothorax:

  • Observation: Small pneumothorax may resolve on its own
  • Oxygen Therapy: Helps speed up recovery
  • Needle Aspiration: Removal of air using a needle
  • Chest Tube Insertion: To drain air and allow the lung to re-expand

Recovery & Care

Recovery depends on the severity and treatment provided. Avoiding strenuous activity, following medical advice, and regular follow-up are important to prevent recurrence.

Emergency Care Can Restore Breathing

Pneumothorax can affect normal breathing and become life-threatening if untreated. Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment help restore lung function and ensure safe recovery.
